SEASON 2024

Porsche Carrera Cup Asia entered its 21st season in 2024 with a packed calendar, a highly competitive grid and several key milestones, including the introduction of an invitational Endurance Challenge for the first time in the series’ history.

The campaign began and ended at Shanghai International Circuit, with the championship once again supporting the Formula 1 Chinese Grand Prix at its season opener. Across eight race events and 15 races, the series delivered close competition in all three categories, culminating in a debut title for 2024 Porsche Junior Alessandro Ghiretti.

Ahead of the opening rounds, the Official Test Days at Shanghai saw 27 Porsche 911 GT3 Cup cars on track, setting the tone for a competitive season. Dylan Pereira topped three of the four sessions, while four-time Pro-Am champion Bao Jinlong once again underlined his consistency in class. Tight margins across Pro, Pro-Am and Am hinted at the close battles to come.

Rounds 1 and 2 marked the return of the Chinese Grand Prix to the calendar for the first time since 2019. Pereira converted his test pace into pole position for both races, but it was Porsche Junior Alessandro Ghiretti who claimed his maiden victory in Race 2 after a decisive opening lap move. Bao Jinlong opened his Pro-Am campaign with a pair of dominant wins, while Eric Kwong took two victories in the Am category.

The series then travelled to Suzuka Circuit for Rounds 3 and 4, where Ghiretti delivered a flawless weekend. Starting from pole in both races, the Frenchman claimed two lights-to-flag victories to take maximum points and establish himself as a title contender. Behind him, Pereira and Mathys Jaubert continued their strong early-season form, regularly featuring on the overall podium. Bao Jinlong extended his perfect start in Pro-Am despite starting deep in the field on Sunday, while Eric Kwong maintained his unbeaten run in the Am class, taking all four class victories across the opening two events.

Rounds 5 and 6 at Chang International Circuit marked the start of the Thailand double-header. Ghiretti once again proved unstoppable, taking two further wins despite intense pressure from Pereira and Jaubert. His consistency allowed him to extend his championship lead as the season approached its halfway point. In Pro-Am, Bao Jinlong continued to deliver, although Race 2 saw Li Zhi Cong take his debut class victory after contact delayed Bao’s charge. The Am category saw a shift in momentum, with home driver Munkong Sathienthirakul claiming his first class wins on home soil, moving himself firmly into title contention against Eric Kwong.

The following stop at the Bangsaen Street Circuit brought new faces to the front. Chris van der Drift and Florian Latorre returned to the series and shared overall victories, while championship challenger Pereira was forced to sit out the event after a qualifying incident. Bao Jinlong returned to the top step in Pro-Am, and the Am class continued to deliver close racing, with Sathienthirakul and Kwong trading victories.

Sepang International Circuit hosted Rounds 9 to 11 and marked the debut of the invitational Endurance Challenge. The weekend featured a mix of conditions, including night racing and wet weather, providing a stern test for the field. Mathys Jaubert claimed his first overall victory after a penalty for Ghiretti in Race 1, while Pereira returned to winning form under the lights in Race 2. Pro-Am victories were shared, with Liu Kai Shun securing his maiden class win, while the Am battle between Kwong and Sathienthirakul remained finely balanced. The weekend concluded with the first endurance race in PCCA history. Ghiretti emerged victorious in challenging wet conditions, making a significant statement in both the overall championship and the new Endurance Challenge standings.

Rounds 12 and 13 at Marina Bay Circuit proved decisive. Pereira delivered a commanding double victory, keeping his title hopes alive heading into the finale. However, Ghiretti’s ability to recover through the field and consistently score ensured he retained control of the championship. Bao Jinlong sealed his fifth Pro-Am title with a tenth class victory of the season, while the Am title battle tightened further, with Sathienthirakul and Kwong once again splitting wins.

The season concluded where it began, with Rounds 14 and 15 and the second Endurance Challenge event at Shanghai. Persistent rain added an extra layer of difficulty to an already high-stakes weekend. Ghiretti capitalised on key moments in both sprint races, taking victory in Round 15 to secure the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia title in his debut season. The Frenchman also went on to claim the Endurance Challenge crown with a controlled drive in the extended finale, completing an outstanding campaign. In Pro-Am, Bao Jinlong added the Endurance Challenge title to his already secured class championship, underlining another dominant season. The Am class title went to Eric Kwong despite late-season pressure from Sathienthirakul, who nevertheless claimed the Endurance Challenge crown in class.

The 2024 Porsche Carrera Cup Asia season showcased depth, consistency and adaptability across all three categories. With a new Endurance Challenge successfully integrated into the calendar and a first-year Porsche Junior claiming the overall title, the championship once again demonstrated its position as the benchmark one-make series in the region.
